defenseless?

Ok, I'm going to start out this post by saying that I adore my dog to bits.

However,

Last night, Kyle's mom was scheduled to arrive late at night. We gave up on waiting for her and went to bed. Lexx is still recovering, so we are still sleeping with him downstairs.

Around two am, Im woken up to key scratching in the door and footsteps in the front hall. Obviously it was them arriving, but it was a strange set of noises to wake up to. Now, they are moving around, moving in suitcases, etc etc.

What does my doberman do? Looks up from his doberball, yawns once, and goes back to sleep.

Now, i know that it wasn't a REAL threat. I know that he's still recovering. I know all of this.

But I can't help but be disappointed in him. I really wanted a doberman for the characteristics that they are known for, protective, loyal, defensive. Does that make me a bad person?

Does it make me a bad owner that I wanted this dog to make me feel SAFE and SECURE?

Maybe he knew not to be concerned. But I still really wish that he'd AT LEAST gotten up to see what was going on. I prefer that he'd have barked. Maybe because I secretly hate that she still has keys to my house and I wish that he'd scared her a little bit...

Maybe because I just... wanted a dog to make me feel safe.

Now a part of me wonders if he'd even wake up if someone came in with bad intentions.

dude, he just had brain surgery :)

just keep loving lexx for what he is - not what he is not. don't get caught up in what you hoped he would be - having high aspirations for anything is going to be a great way to get disappointed in any area of your life. but he is still who he is, which is a wonderful dog. and he's alive.

and for the record, most people who think their dogs will do something, actually have no idea. the loudest dog in my house when someone comes is the *aussie* :)

Hi,
Your blog entry really made me laugh, when our Dobie is asleep it takes a bomb to wake her up :)However I wouldn't worry too much, if the situation called for it I think you would be amazed at the change in your dog. We had a builder working for us for several weeks, each day our dogs greeted him as a friend. Then one day he aggressively tried to demand extra money from us, it was like someone turned a switch on, both our dogs went wild. Needless to say the builder backed down PDQ.
Hope that puts your mind at ease a little, if you need his help, don't worry your dog will give it.
