Well, the neurology appointment went well. After having to drive through Toronto in the morning ( YUCK YUCK AND YUCK), we arrived at the clinic and finally got to meet Lexx's surgeon.
He was a really great guy, very relaxed, very confident but not in a cocky way, which I appreciate.
I cannot stand being talked down to. I am a very good researcher with a strong grasp of biological context and I often find that vets demand to explain everything to me as if I'm in fifth grade, causing me to become bored and frustrated.
We have decided that the surgery should be asap, and we are booking for next week.
I'm terrified.

Surgeon appointment
I have contacted Lexxington's surgeon in Toronto and made our first appointment with him for this thursday at 10 am. I am hoping that things will move forward quickly from here, though I must note that thinking about this makes it very real and I am currently quite nauseous.
Also, as a side note, Lexxington and I had a lovely loose leash walk on a flat collar last night with NO pulling.
*sigh*

Walmart Greeter?
I have always stated that Lexxington's dream job would be a walmart greeter. He gets so much joy out of meeting anybody and everybody, it truly makes him happy.
On saturday, we had the honour of representing the Doberman breed at the DPCC booth at the Ontario Sportsman show ( thanks Elizabeth!!)
To make a long story short, Lexxington's job was to stand around and greet everyone that came to the booth, demonstrate some tricks, schmooze the crowd.. and did he EVER do a good job. I was a bit worried about how he would behave with SO many dogs around, its been awhile since he's been in a dog-heavy area, so I wasn't entirely confident, but he BLEW away my expectations.
He must have greeted 500 people... including kids of all ages who hung off of him at every angle, babies in strollers grabbing at his face and adults young and old, fearful and confident.
He definitely changed some opinions about dobermans, one lady in particular stated that she was terrified. Lexx looked up at her with his golden eyes of sweetness, and laid down at her feet. Looking up as if to say, "look, i'm smaller now, please come pat me?" She did tenatively, telling me how she was terrified of these dogs as a child and she'd never gotten over it. She gently patted his nose, his head and he remained still like a statue, moving only to lick her hand. She walked away smiling.
One man brought his young daughter over ( 7-8 months? Im terribly bad at judging the age of children..) in a stroller. Lexx stuck his nose in tentatively and sniffed the human puppy. She erupted into fits of giggles and started kicking her feet and moving her hands. He just stood there, little baby feet hitting his ears and little baby hands grabbing at his nose. The father got all excited and started snapping pictures left and right. I wish I could get a copy, THAT would be a good representation of the breed. Lexx seemed very satisfied with himself.
We were there for 5 hours, and by the end of the day, Lexx was DONE. He lay down, flat out on the floor, and went to sleep. Poor puppy had to work hard with all those nubbin wigglies and kisses for the strangers.
I'm so proud of my boy. He's just such a sweetheart.

Spring=loss of leash manners
Ugh.
I took Lexx for a good walk in the woods today and MAN was he a pully little dober ball. I've been so proud of his accomplishments on his leash manners in the last few months, and all of a sudden, with the appearance of spring and good yummy smells, his manners have flown out the window again.
I am so happy that Lexx is doing better lately health wise, his energy level is higher and that could have something to do with it too.
Its a bit of a catch-22, healthy dog= pully dog...
I think we're going to have to go back to our prong lessons for a week or so... I don't want this behaviour to escalate before his surgery, because afterwards.. on a harness, I might be screwed.
poor little pup, he just has SO much energy... then he zonks out again. At least he has moments of energy.

Faith in the breed
I stand outside a store waiting patiently with my favourite friend by my side. Half of the people who pass by act like he might suddenly turn rabid and attack them, the other half approaches to ask if he would like to be patted.
Some tell me stories of dobermans they've had in the past, or known through a friend. About how friendly and fantastic they are as they enjoy Lexx's attention and remember. Some comment that he's so much NICER than this dog they once knew, or WOW look at his tail go, what a good boy!
Some roll down their car windows and yell "Nice dog!" "beautiful animal" "wow what a dog!"
Some come over with caution, full of questions about the breed. The inevitable question " have you had any problems with him?"....
have I had any problems?.... My standard answer is, dobermans are a breed with a lot of health issues, you have to be careful where you get one ... I do the reputable breeder or rescue speech... and I casually mention that I HAVE had some problems but nothing breed specific and he's the best dog in the world, accentuating how friendly and personable he is.
best dog in the world. I have had nothing but problems, and still, every doberman I see I swoon over, I ask to talk to, I stare out the car window at. Every dobe pup picture melts my heart, every successful rescue brightens my day and every horror story makes me cry.
Have I had any problems? Sure, We've had problems... but you know what.. I still cannot imagine owning any other type of dog. I cannot imagine a better companion, or a better best friend.
that.. that is faith in the breed.

coming together
I finally managed to reach Lexx's neurologist today and things are finally moving forward..
Im planning on calling the surgeon tomorrow and making an appointment for him to see Lexx. I feel like I spend so much of my energy right now planning lexx's appointments, and this one, to top it off, is all the way in Toronto.
Sooner than later I say.

Barn fun and role model
Its a saturday, and Saturday means ONE thing to dogs...more specifically dobermans.. it means MOMMY is HOME! ( please note that I am currently writing this from work, because as much as I wish that Lexx was right, I often work all weekend...sigh...)
Anyways, morning started with kyle dropping me off at the barn with the Lexxball for a good walk through the woods. Since Charlie is still "off" all he's allowed to do is walk... which when around a ring is incredibly "I want to nail my hand to my eyeball" boring... but through the woods on a decently sunny, warmish morning its pretty fantastic.
Lexx proceeded through his regular "i'm at the barn" routine which includes a great deal of zoomies, a few "just because I CAN" barks at Charlie and a lot of sniffing and bouncing at the pure joy of being outside somewhere fun.
The walk proceeded to go well, 45 minutes of wandering aimlessly through trails watching the sun come up fully and enjoying the fact that Lexx has finally learned to bounce everywhere BUT under Charlie's feet.
Return to the barn showed that some other people had decided to come out too and the work was getting done. Spent awhile discussing Lexx's prognosis with my barn owner ( who i ADORE) and watched Lexx attempt to inspire the TERRIBLY obese lab belonging to a lady who rents several stalls to play.
30 minutes later another friend showed up...a small fluffy poodle like thing? I don't know what breed he really is, but he's terribly cute. After YELPING and running away at the mere sight of lexx ( to which lexx ran to me and said I SWEAR I DIDNT DO ANYTHING MOM!!!!) Fluffy dog, Wiley the fat lab and Lexxball started a fantastic play session.
In my words it was something like this:
fluffy dog: chase me! chase me! bark bark bark! Look how quick and agile i am! chase chase chase!
Lexx: no prob little dog, i'm bigger and faster than you ( and look much more handsome doing it...) I'll chase you lets go!!
Wiley: guuyyysss slloooww doowwwnnn pant pant pant.. tooo fat...cannooott runnn..dammmmnnn
Poor Wiley is only 2... and his owner REFUSES to believe me that he's fat. The poor dog is pretty much a large rectangle and can't even begin to keep up with lexx in speed or distance...its just so sad because he's a sweet dog.
Kyle picked us up 2 hours later and Lexx PASSED out in the back of the truck. Kyle bought a new blackberry and Lexx came in to the Bell store while we were deciding. He wandered in, platzed at my feet and waited patiently for us to be finished. Several customers and the staff commented on how AMAZINGLY behaved he was. One man and his daughter kept saying, wow what a nice dog. Look at the beautiful dog. Lexx, of course, was proud.
Proceeded to the pet store for Lexxball kibbles and helped a guy pick a collar for his new 8 month old lab cross... he wasn't sure on size so lexx played model and we approximated. We then discussed training etc and he asked his kids, " do you think our dog will EVER be so calm and well behaved as this one?" good boy lexx. He got a new tuffy turtle as a reward. ( i have a compulsion and should NEVER be allowed in pet stores...
Home time brough a passed out Lexx in the sun on the couch.. I broke his heart leaving to go to work ( wish I wasn't here too) but he's so exhausted, he'll probably just sleep anyways.
I'm so proud of my boy, he's such a lovable role model

just loving my dog
Well, now that lexx's diagnosis is in, I've not only spent the last three days in a complete daze, but also loving every single second of being with him.
The weekend was all good times, Lexx was high energy after recovering from the anesthetics on friday and our walk consisted of two speeds, ZOOMIE and stop. It was wonderful to see him bouncing around with energy. Maybe he forgot that he was sick. I spent the day at the Orangeville dog show, but Kyle sent me reports that Lexx seemed to have forgotten that he was water soluble and was running around in the backyard in the rain with no issues getting wet. Auntie Kristin came over to visit after the show and Lexx, in true Lexx style, was all nubbins of joy for HIS visitor.
Sunday we spent the entire morning cleaning the house, meaning that Lexxball was there helping his mom at every turn. Mom? can I do the laundry? Look how good I am at shaking the clothing dry.... MOM? Can I vaccuum? Look! I can chase the vaccuum and pick up ALL the left over kitty hair. MOM!! I'm helping see? He is always stuck to me like glue lately. Cannot leave my side... only for napping.
Walks on sunday were in the rain, and once again, no issues with getting wet. How lucky am I? TWO days in a row with a bouncy Lexxball that seemed happy and joyful and full of puppy energy.
Yesterday wasn't as good a day, he simply resolved to trotting beside me instead of zoomies.. he seemed a bit more sleepy and "off". The mother in law was visiting last night and Lexx doesn't particularly like her. Most likely because I don't like her and she stresses me out. Being intuitive like he is, he did all his worst things, jumped on her, ran at her, chased the kitties in front of her. With a smug sense of satisfaction he then curled up on the couch like. HA! I don't LIKE you. And my MOMMY doesn't EITHER. GO AWAY.
Today I plan to speak with Karen regarding the after treatment required for Lexx's proposed surgery... Then I have to figure out how I'm possibly going to find the money to pay for it.
I have no idea how... all I know is that I will.

Diagnosis
hydroencephelus... exactly like his sister.
I can't really get my mind together to write a lot right now.
All I can get out is that I'm totally crushed. I feel like my soul and heart have been ripped from my body and thrown in a blender.

the MRI
Lexx is currently at the OVC getting an MRI.
The OVC. The place I never wanted to have to go with my own pet.
I have a horrible, sinking feeling of doom.
I feel suddenly like everything is going to be over faster than I thought and that there is so much MORE I should have done.

UNHOUSETRAINABLE
SERIOUSLY. I'M AT THE END OF MY ROPE.
Lexx has let himself out of his crate twice in the last two days. I come home to a bouncy happy "look what i managed to do" dog. And NEVER do I find an accident.
then.. today.. in FRONT of me, well, in hearing range.. he pees on the floor.
what the bloody hell is wrong with this DOG? He rings his bell to go outside.. then next time he pees on the floor without asking.
CLEARLY something is wrong with the housetraining here. except that he DOES ask. HE KNOWS what the bell is for. He rings it, then runs outside to pee, then runs back.
PLEASEEEEE someone explain this to me PLEAASSE
I've gone back to square one, things go well for a period of time, then BANG, something like THIS happens and he pees again. He's already crate all day and all night because he can't be trusted alone...
I'm in tears of frustration. This is making me resent and hate my dog. I don't care HOW bad that makes me sound, its the truth. I just want a normal dog. I just want a normal life. I just want a housetrained dog!!
IS THAT REALLY SO MUCH TO ASK?

Just mommy and me...
Kyle is away at a conference for 2 days so its just Lexxball and I. I used to hate the thought of coming home when Kyle was away, the house is so big and noisy and there are so many big dark windows that look out into the big, dark, scary night. I know, I'm a wimp, but I've never liked being alone at night, and this property is so big, it just accentuates my fears.
Now I have Lexx to keep me company. He knows when I'm nervous and sticks right by my side ALL night.
I went to work super early on monday so that I could be home early to hang out with Lexx. We started by going to the barn to visit poor broken Charlie. I rarely take Lexx to the barn, he's just so jumpy and hyper and is CONVINCED that horses are huge puppies and want to PLAY PLAY PLAY. I couldn't stomach the thought of leaving him at home alone though, so along he came.
When I arrived, I noticed that fellow horse owner, Dawn, was already there, her black truck waiting patiently for her return. Dawn used to be owned by a female black and tan dobe who died recently and tragically of DCM. She now has two new dogs, black labs one female and one intact male who is about a year old.
I wasn't overly happy to see them there, Lexx hasn't been around any intact males since his neuter and a dog fight is ALL I need right now. However, Lexx was a perfect gentlemen and they all played really nicely under CLOSE supervision from me. He only threw in a few doberstyle mouth snaps and grumbles before I told him to behave and mind his manners.
We then went for a walk in the woods, Lexx, Charlie and I. Charlie on a lead rope came along like a dog with Lexx bounding along the trail with not a care in the world about the freezing cold wind and hard ground. Its so nice to see him like that, sometimes its weeks between days when I get to see the bouncy, carefree dobe that I so love. So along we went until I couldn't feel my hands of my face. I'm sure that Charlie appreciated the air and the nice walk, not so sure about the bouncy brother, but Lexx was on his best behaviour ( for once)
Then it was home time Dinner for puppy and I and some cuddling on the couch. Lexx PASSED out after his barn adventure and snored the night away on the couch.
When it came time for bed, I couldn't imagine the idea of putting Lexx in his crate... how is he supposed to protect his mom from the scary dark if he's in a cage? So I folded... for the first time EVER in the time I have had this little puppy ball and he came to sleep in bed.
It took him 15 minutes or so to settle, though I can't blame him since he's only been upstairs a handful of times in his life...he eventually snuggled in beside me and made me feel a whole lot safer. I knew that if something went wrong he'd alert me, and there we slept, cuddled up for the entire night. I have to admit, it was nice having him there... but... we'd DEFINITELY require a king sized bed if it were to become a regular thing. My "little" doberman seems a lot bigger when he's taking up half the queen sized bed!
